ON EST BIEN SUR LE : VOLNAY 1er cru CHAMPANS PIERRICK BOULEY 2021

En 2017, Pierrick Bouley reprend le domaine familial autrefois connu sous le nom de Pascal Bouley.

2021 Volnay “Champans”: This too is wonderfully perfumed with its cool and ultra-pure aromas of plum, various dark berries and a lovely array of spice elements. There is a bit better density though somewhat surprisingly, not quite the same refinement to the solidly powerful and markedly stony flavors that deliver slightly better depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale. This relatively robust Champans that offers an appealing combination of power and balance. 92/2033+

As I reported last year, fans of Domaine Pascal Bouley should be aware that the name has changed in favor of his son, Pierrick, as of the 2020 vintage. With respect to the 2021 growing season, Pierrick noted that “I love this vintage for its elegance and classicism, the only problem is that there isn’t more of it. There was of course the frost but also the season was tough to manage as it seemed like there was always something to be concerned about, especially mildew and oidium. But in a sense we lucked out because when the frost hit in early April, I hadn’t yet pruned the 1ers so we lost ‘only’ 10 to 15%, which is still of consequence but nothing like the 50%+ loss rates in so many communes in the Côte. By contrast, I had pruned the regional and the villages wines and my losses there were substantial. For me, the heavy frost of 2016 was the lesson that I will never forget about pruning as late as possible and it served me well to remember it in 2021. I chose to begin picking on the 21st of September and brought in very clean if not spotless fruit that averaged between 12 and 12.8% in terms of potential alcohol. I did my normal vinification without sulfur and no chaptalization though for some reason, or reasons, it finished much faster than usual. The malos also finished faster than normal and again, I have no explication as to why. The good news is that the wines have turned out much better than I had hoped and while I am always hesitant to compliment my results, I confess to being pretty pleased.” I would agree with Bouley that his 2021s are indeed very good as they are a lovely blend of transparency, refinement and pleasure that should  repay mid-term keeping.
